The Internet's Most Exhaustive List of Unconventional Insurance Policies Underwritten by Lloyd's of London
If we lived in the Harry Potter universe, insurance would likely be the Dark Arts. Described by Severus Snape as "many, varied, ever-changing, and eternal," the Dark Arts has a way of offending many and delighting few, and although I'd like to think of myself as more of a Ravenclaw, there is something curious about the murky nature of the Dark Arts... and insurance is no different. If you don't believe me, look into reinsurance—the branch of insurance in which insurance companies insure other insurance companies. (It doesn't even stop there... there are even more layers of reinsurance on top of that.)
The conniving nature of insurance has even muddled my own head. In games of Monopoly, opponents often sell properties to each other for cash. I, on the other hand, like to purchase insurance—"in exchange for $25 every time I 'Pass Go and Collect $200,' I want 25% rent immunity in perpetuity whenever I land on any of your properties." (No... I'm NOT fun at parties, and I AM a nuisance to myself and others.)
Needless to say, for the few who enjoy nitty-gritty, often vexing indulgences like No Wave music and perversely-flavored KitKats, bizarro insurance policies are a treat. But while other publications have only mentioned small handfuls of weird insurance policies underwritten by Lloyd's, none have attempted to compile an exhaustive list. So, to the best of my abilities, I have collected as many zany Lloyd's insurance polices as I could find and have provided sources for all of my references (including multiple if they were referenced in multiple sources). Where available, I have included the active policy year(s), names of the insured, and how much the insurance policies were worth (including inflation adjustments* when known years of policies existed and predate 2016).
